Project summary

The aim of the Medical Signs Research Project (mid-2008 to mid-2011) is to help foster an effective and shared sign language vocabulary for the discussion of medical and mental health issues in order to improve health outcomes for deaf people. A vital part of this project will be the creation of a sub-site of Auslan Signbank called Medical Signbank which will be dedicated to explaining medical terminology and providing information on the most commonly used or preferred signs in the deaf community, based on feedback received through Medical Signbank.

The linguistic research and resources built into Medical Signbank aims to eventually standardize the Auslan medical and mental health signs used by deaf people and their Auslan interpreters. The Medical Signbank pages are being developed. During 2008-09 the page you are currently reading with change and grow into Medical Sign bank. The new sub-site will bring together sign language interpreters and their deaf clients, as well as interested health care service providers, by providing a site for feedback and information sharing by all major stakeholders.
